Duties:

Developing education students' English language proficiency; 
Developing education students' knowledge of Home and First Additional Language curricula and teaching methodology in the GET and FET phases;  
Developing and evaluating teaching and learning materials for English language teaching; Participating in the development and assessment of teaching and learning opportunities (practical teaching); 
Participating in Social Impact projects and rendering appropriate services to the University and teaching community.

Senior Lecturer:

  • Teaching English in undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
  • Research and publishing in chosen areas of specialisation;
  • Supervising and co-supervising postgraduate students at honours, master¿s and doctoral level.

Candidate Requirements

Job Requirements:

A relevant South African qualification to teach English; English literature and/ or Applied English Language Studies at third-year university level or equivalent qualification; 
Excellent spoken and written language proficiency in English; 
Appropriate school teaching experience; 
Appropriate teaching experience; 
Knowledge of English language education in the foundation, intermediate, senior and FET phases within the CAPS education policy;
The ability to teach and assess in English; 
A good working knowledge of a second official South African language.

Senior Lecturer:

  • A relevant PhD degree with Literature or (Applied) Linguistics as core element;
  • Experience of teaching English in higher education contexts;
  • Experience of postgraduate supervision or as co-supervisor at honours, master's and doctoral level in language education;
  • Research and publication in chosen areas of specialisation and relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Lecturer:

  • A relevant Master's degree with Literature or (Applied) Linguistics as core element;
  • An approved publication schedule;
  • Demonstrable potential of research and publications in peer-reviewed journals;
  • The potential to supervise and co-supervise postgraduate students at Honours level.

Recommendation:

  • A PhD or proof of registration, or proposal for PhD (if not in possession of PhD yet) on Lecturer level position;
  • Experience in and / or knowledge of Applied Linguistics or Applied English Language Studies; Experience in and / or knowledge of the South African education contexts;
  • Experience in and / or knowledge of technology-aided English language education;
  • A proven interest in curriculum studies in general;
  • A basic knowledge of isiXhosa.
