Summary

***INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY PLEASE***

The team at our Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Portfolio is looking for a new Visitor Operations and Experience Manager. This is a fantastic opportunity to grow your National Trust career, at a time when the portfolio has exciting ambitions and plans for the future.

At Ashridge we currently offer a visitor center and some Retail, in a lovely woodland setting alongside the Bridgewater Monument and not too far from c.400 year old Pitstone Windmill. At Dunstable Downs, a ten minute drive away, we offer a Café & Retail proposition for our visitors, whether families enjoying kite flying on the hills or walkers taking in the views from one of the highest points in the region.

This is an internal opportunity only, so we are inviting internal candidates to apply if you feel that you fit the bill.

What it's like to work here

Something for everyone - with diverse archeology ranging from a late Neolithic, early Bronze age Hill Forts, evidence from Roman and Medieval times, plus interest from WW1 & WW2 found spread amongst one of the largest broadleaf managed Woodlands in the NT, with over 1000 Ancient trees nestled in the AONB Woodland and chalk grass features of the Chilterns Hills, across more than 6000 acres and multiple locations.

Across our ‘open access’ SAC & SSSI properties we are home to many rare & protected orchids, butterflies, bats, wood peckers and so much more.

Less well known, is the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral, one of only 3 worldwide and just a stones thrown from Whipsnade Zoo (not NT).

But if small ‘Mansion’ Properties are also ‘your thing’ then our Shaw’s Corner gem helps to complete our ‘full house’ of properties that need your support.

What you'll be doing

As the voice of the visitor, you’ll be responsible for ensuring our plans and ambitions focus on the experience of the visitor and how these can blend with the operational reality of the properties.

At Dunstable Downs you’ll be responsible for the visitor centre, working closely with our Area Managers to help ensure the VE & commercial teams deliver the very best experience for our visitors.

At Ashridge Estate we’re looking to respond to the way our visitors like to enjoy the very different areas across the property, targeting investments to protect and conserve the environment, whilst also significantly improving the visitor experience. The infrastructure required has project management support and will be a great opportunity for you to ensure the visitor experience is considered at every turn.

Managing a team of staff and volunteers, you’ll work as a key member of the Property leadership team, so you’ll need to be great at managing teams and working collaboratively with your peers if we are to achieve our ambition. You’ll also need to be confident managing budgets, and we’d love you to bring a strong understanding of how the Trust works to this role.

Who we're looking for

We’d love you to be:

  • A true people person, always thinking of how visitors, staff and volunteers are experiencing the properties
  • A confident and calm presence at the property, able to bring people together to create a united team
  • Able to engage with internal and external stakeholders and partners with ease and confidence
  • Adept at managing the operation i.e. rotas, budgets and planning
  • A leader who takes time to support, coach and mentor their team
  • Familiar with the ways of working and procedures required at the Trust
  • Great at getting stuff done.

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.

Benefits for working at the National Trust include:

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
  • Free entry to our properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
